Information About the Canada GST/HST Tax Break

Wow, a break from the GST 5%! It's great to keep a bit more money in your pocket. While not everything is included in this tax relief, there are plenty of savings to enjoy. The general rule * applies to toys, toy sets and toy systems designed for children under 14 years of age, but also includes all jigsaw puzzles (adult too).

There are some exceptions: Items not covered by the GST/HST break include dress-up clothes (costumes), jewellery and accessories. Activity books, colouring books and sticker books are exempt, as well as board/card games and Lego sets designated for ages 14+. Room decor items such as lava lamps and liquid tiles also do not qualify, and gift-wrapping materials, greeting cards, and shopping bags will still be GST taxable.

* For a more comprehensive list of qualifying items, visit the official Government of Canada website: GST/HST break - Canada.ca.

The Government of Canada is introducing a temporary GST/HST tax break on certain items from December 14, 2024, to February 15, 2025. As a shopper, you do not need to take any extra steps to receive the tax relief – qualifying items will automatically have the GST/HST waived at the point of sale. Note: Provinces where GST and PST are paid separately will be saving only the GST on qualifying items while still paying the PST.

Please note this tax break applies only to purchases made during the specified period of December 14, 2024, to February 15, 2025. Purchases made outside of this timeframe are not eligible for this tax break and the benefit is not retroactive.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate these changes during this very busy time of year.
